First response (the wet day)
If the cellar is in water now:
- Electricity — if water is near sockets or the consumer unit, treat it as unsafe. We are not an emergency electrician.
- Stop adding water — washing machine discharge into the cellar, a burst in the kitchen above, a downpipe emptying at the chute. Plumbing leaks are not Type C.
- Pump-out — a wet vac or a hired pump may clear a Primley Park coal hole. A tanker on King Lane is rare and neighbour-sensitive; say so if you think you need one.
- Do not hack off plaster as a panic move, and do not paint slurry on wet brick “to seal it”.
- Photograph the high-water mark on the party wall. That mark is evidence for the later survey.
Alwoodley Cellar Waterproofing is not a 24/7 flood-restoration franchise. If you need a same-day pump-out, say so on the phone. The waterproofing specification still waits until we can see the empty room.
What “heavy rain in LS17” usually means here
Alwoodley sits above the Meanwood valley, not on a floodplain. Typical patterns:
- Film after rain on the slab of a 1930s utility — groundwater through clay, or a land drain that has silted under a large interwar garden.
- Water at the coal chute — surface water from the front path on The Avenue / King Lane finding the original opening.
- Golf-course edge / King Lane — wet ground on Moortown Golf Course is the published source of Alwoodley Beck. Plots on that side of the parish deserve that question, not a generic “high water table” line.
- Not canal overtopping, not Worth Valley, not a mill goit.

Full waterproofing is the second job
A flooded cellar that dries and never returns may only have needed a drain repair or a path re-cut away from the chute. A flooded cellar that returns is a candidate for cavity drain and a sump.
The discovery survey is booked once you can get into the room. Cost sits on the cost page as ranges, not a flood-day guess.

Is Alwoodley at river-flood risk in the cellar?
Not in the way a valley-bottom terrace is. Cellar water here is overwhelmingly clay, land drains, chute detailing, and local wet ground — including Alwoodley Beck’s source area — not the Aire.
Should I run a dehumidifier and wait?
After a one-off plumbing leak, sometimes. After repeated rain-film on a Primley Park slab, a dehumidifier hides the smell and does not fix the path the water takes.
